Transgender Electrolysis

NHS provider of Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the only scientifically proven, safe, permanent way to remove unwanted hair when performed by skilled and experienced practitioners.

The BIAE demands a high standard of skill and ethical conduct from its members in order to provide professional and reliable electrolysis service to the public. Candidate electrolysist's must complete rigorous assessments, both theoretical and practical, in front of the BIAE examining board before being accepted onto the register. They are the only professional organisation to personally check the skills of all listed members through additional assessments and require members to undertake annual Continuous Professional Development to update skills and knowledge.

Electrolysis is the recommended method of hair removal that is approved by the British Medical Association for pre-surgery Transgender patients for facial hair and genital donor sites.

The following is a guide to Transgender pre-operation core services and funding:

  1. Client contacts GP regarding gender dysphoria
  2. Client should then be referred to Gender Identity Clinic
  3. Client attends clinic for initial assessment
  4. There is then a period of 2 years psychiatric assessment under the NHS, which includes discussions on current life, occupation, past life history and any emotional problems they have experienced.
  5. Client given a number of sessions of electrolysis for facial hair removal on NHS.
  6. Referral to counselling or speech therapy if required
  7. Client is then assessed for hormone therapy suitability
  8. On successful completion of 2 years assessments, two psychiatrists are required to agree that client is suitable for Genital Reassignment Surgery (GRS)
  9. Core hair removal is required prior to surgery - funding is provided by NHS.
  10. Approval given for core funding of genitalia hair removal with electrolysis on NHS.

Bupa now fund both facial and genital donor site electrolysis. If you are a member of Bupa, please speak to Peacehaven Beauty to discuss how to proceed with funding.
